Creating a Breastfeeding-Friendly Environment at Home

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  The early days of motherhood will seem to go by in a blur of feeds, obsessing (and celebrating) poopy diapers, and a bizarre, yet unique, rollercoaster of intense love and anxiety.  I promise that no matter what you go through during this time, it will be an incredible journey of self-discovery.

Planning for life after birth is as important as planning for your labor experience.  If you’ve chosen to breastfeed, creating a breastfeeding or pumping-friendly environment at home can make the experience more enjoyable and help you and your little one have the best start possible.

Here are some tips to help you set the stage for successful breastfeeding…

1. Choose the Right Spot

Find a cozy corner in your home that feels welcoming and calm. Whether it’s a comfy chair in the living room, a quiet nook in the bedroom, or a sunny spot by the window, make sure it’s a place where you can relax. A good chair with back support can work wonders, so consider investing in a comfy chair with armrests and a footstool or leg extension for additional comfort.

2. Keep Essentials Close By

Keep all the essentials within arm’s reach to make breastfeeding as smooth as possible. This might include:

  • Nursing pads: To manage any milk leaks.
  • Chucks pads: To manage any mommy leaks
  • Silicone breast pump (ex: Hakaa): for catching milk from the other breast while feeding
  • Lanolin breast cream or Silverette nursing cups: for prevention and treatment of cracked nipples
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is vital for milk production
  • Snacks: Quick, healthy options that help with milk production and energy levels: nuts/nut butter on toast or wheat crackers, boiled eggs, oatmeal, yogurt with granola, fresh fruits, cottage cheese, dates, Halawa, chia seed pudding, hummus with veggies
  • Breastfeeding pillow: choose a pillow that provides good back support and connects around your body to help with height adjustment and to prevent it from slipping away from you (ex, My Brestfriend nursing pillow)
  • Burp cloths: Always handy for those little messes
  • Diapers/change of clothes: for the explosive poops that are bound to leak up their back
  • Phone, tablet, book: For catching up on your favorite shows, reading, or even using breastfeeding apps

3. Create a Relaxing Atmosphere

A peaceful environment can help you and your baby feel more relaxed. Consider these ideas:

  • Soft lighting: during night feeds, try switching to red lightbulbs in lamps, fairy lights, or a salt lamp to create a soothing ambiance and help you and your baby get back to sleep
  • Calming sounds: White noise machines or nature sounds can help set the mood
  • Aromatherapy: If you enjoy scents, use good quality essential oils to create a calming atmosphere (ex, doTERRA).  Caution: avoid sage, peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, or oregano oils, as they can reduce your milk supply

4. Involve Your Loved Ones

Breastfeeding can be a team effort! Encourage your family to be involved by having them help with tasks like:

  • Support: They can help bring and feed you snacks, drinks, or anything else you might need during a feeding session.
  • Cuddling: Skin-to-skin contact is excellent for both you and the baby. Your partner can also practice skin-to-skin while they hold the baby before or after feeding, fostering that special bond so you can get some much-needed rest and have a hot meal or shower.

5. Communicate with Family and Friends

Let your family and friends know your breastfeeding goals and the support you need. Please encourage them to respect your feeding space and allow you the time and privacy to nurse comfortably. Whether it’s a quick chat or a more extended visit, it’s helpful when they understand your needs.

6. Be Prepared for Challenges

Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and challenges may arise. Please remember that The Mother’s Village supports you through these challenges.  Our Postpartum Doulas, Lactation Counselors, and Village of Mothers community can help you navigate any obstacles.
