This term was first coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970s, the term emphasizes that becoming a mother isn't just about the physical changes of pregnancy and childbirth.

Much like adolescence signifies a major developmental shift, matrescence is a complex change for a woman adjusting to her new identity as a mother.
