Using a Birth Ball in Labor for a Smooth Delivery

If you’re preparing for labor and looking for ways to make the experience more comfortable, a fantastic tool that I often suggest to mothers is the birth ball. In this quick guide, I’ll dive into the benefits of using a birth ball, share some handy techniques, and offer tips to help you have a smoother delivery.

A birth ball, often called an exercise ball, is a large, inflatable ball designed for use during pregnancy and labor. They come in different sizes (55 cm, 65cm, and 75 cm) to suit various heights, helping you find the perfect fit for your comfort.

This simple ball can provide comfort during those achy last weeks of pregnancy and help with your baby’s position before birth. During labor, the birth ball can help with cervical dilation by providing more space in your pelvis for the baby to move downward.

1. Comfort and Pain Relief

One of the biggest perks of using a birth ball is its comfort. Bouncing or rocking on the ball can help ease tension and reduce the intensity of contractions. Many moms find that simply sitting on the ball can make a difference, especially while having a lower back massage from your birth team! (wink, wink)

2. Better Positioning

Using a birth ball encourages optimal positioning for your baby. Staying mobile by walking, squatting, and lunging is essential to keep your labor progressing.  But, when you need to rest, sitting or leaning on the birth ball helps the baby move further into your pelvis while taking a break from being mobile.  This creates more pressure and brings on more contractions, leading to a shortened labor time.

3. Relaxation and Focus

Swaying or bouncing gently on a birth ball can be a great way to find your rhythm, helping you focus your energy and stay calm.  Labor is as much a mental process as it is a physical experience.  You can ride the wave of each contraction with a little more ease through deep breathing and rhythm movements.

Choosing the Right Size

Your height will guide you in the ball size that is right for you. Ideally, your knees should be about 10cm (4in) lower than your hips when you sit on it.

As a rule:

  • If you are up to 1.73m (5ft 8in) in height, getting a 65cm ball is best.
  • If you are taller than 1.73m (5ft 8in), it is best to get a 75cm ball.

Getting Comfortable

Start by sitting on the ball with your feet flat on the floor. Keep your back straight and shoulders relaxed. Feel free to gently bounce or sway your hips side to side to find a comfortable rhythm.

Techniques and Positions

Here are some techniques to try with your birth ball:

  • Gentle Bouncing: This can help ease tension and provide a soothing rhythm during contractions.
  • Rocking Side to Side: Swaying your hips in hula movements or a figure 8 can promote relaxation and help the baby move into the correct position.
  • Leaning Over the Ball: For extra support, lean over the ball while standing, kneeling, squatting, or lunging. This position can open your pelvis wider and provide relief during contractions.
  • Support During Contractions: Use the ball to lean against or hold onto during contractions or while on your hands and knees- while rocking back into the open space between your ankles.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Everyone’s labor experience differs, so find what works best for you.

Tips for a Smooth Delivery

  • Sit on the birth ball while having a CTG monitor done instead of lying on your back in bed.  If you need to spend time on the monitor, this will keep the baby moving downward with gravity.
  • Create a Cozy Environment: Set up your labor space with soft lighting, calming music, and anything else that makes you feel at home. A cozy atmosphere can make a big difference!
  • Breathing Techniques: Combine the use of the ball with deep breathing. Focusing on your breath can help you stay relaxed and manage pain.
  • Involve Your Partner: Your partner can help by giving you gentle massages while you use it and encouraging you to keep drinking and eating light snacks.
  • Stay Hydrated: Keep water and coconut water nearby. Staying hydrated is vital to maintaining energy and helping your uterus contract during labor.

What to Expect When Using a Birth Ball

As you use the birth ball, you may find that it helps ease discomfort and provides a sense of control. Don’t hesitate to switch positions or try something else to prevent fatigue.

Conclusion: Embrace the Journey

Using a birth ball during labor can enhance your experience, making it more comfortable and manageable. With the techniques and tips we’ve shared, you’re well-equipped to embrace your labor journey. Trust your instincts and communicate with your healthcare team about what feels best for you.

FAQs: Your Birth Ball Questions Answered

  • Can I use a birth ball at any time? Absolutely! Birth balls are perfect during pregnancy while sitting for long periods, in labor, and while rocking your newborn to sleep.
  • Is it safe to use a birth ball during the pushing stage? Yes! You can push in any suitable position if you are off your tailbone. Hands-and-knee positions supported by the birth ball will take pressure off your bottom and give your baby lots of room to descend with each contraction.
  • Should I bring my ball to the hospital? Most hospitals and birth centers have some balls in their labor and delivery suites but rarely have them in their triage area. It is best to bring your ball with you so that you can use it immediately during triage (while on CTG) and then have the correct size for your height during the rest of your labor.
